I was born in western Pennsylvania and grew up in a place where racing wasn’t just
something on TV – it was something you felt in your chest on Saturday nights. I’m 58 now,
and I still remember being six years old at Sharon Speedway, watching the local dirt track
heroes like Lou Blaney, Doug Wolfgang, and “Slammin’” Sammy Swindell sling it around in
their winged sprints. From there it went to NASCAR and Cale Yarborough, and as I got older
my passion shifted to open-wheel – first CART, then F1. Ayrton Senna became the guy for
me and still is.
I’ve been married to my wife Angela for 26 years, and we live in Howland, Ohio. We have
two boys. Vincent is in Graduate School at the University of Dayton working on his
Doctorate of Physical Therapy, and Anthony is the Chassis Team Lead for the University of
Akron Zips Formula SAE Racing Team, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Between the
three of us (and my wife, who is now leading our family Fantasy F1 league), cars and racing
often find their way into daily conversation. We are only a few hours from Mid-Ohio and
July 4 th race weekends have become a yearly family trip.
I first dipped my toes into sim racing back in 2000, running NASCAR at work during lunch
with the guys… on a joystick. I didn’t get back into it again until 2010 on Xbox using a
controller, and finally upgraded in 2015 with an entry-level Thrustmaster wheel and pedals,
mostly running F1 games. In 2020 I made the jump to iRacing. When it came time to
upgrade, Fanatec’s lead times and customer support horror stories pushed me to try
something new, so I went with a MOZA R12 base, GS wheel, and CRP2 pedals.
With an engineering background, I couldn’t resist building my own rig. I bought some
tubing, studied the rigs on the market, took what I liked from each, added my own ideas,
and designed the whole thing in CAD. The best part wasn’t the final product, although
nice—it was that both of my sons helped me build it. For that reason alone, the rig is
priceless.
I love racing online, even if lately it feels like the “iRacing idiots” have me on speed dial and
find me in way too many races over the last few months, but I continue to go into each race
thinking this one will be different. I’ve played team sports most of my youth, and it’s true:
it’s not the wins and losses you remember most; it’s the friendships that were created with
your teammates.
That’s exactly what Agee Motorsports has become for me. Being part of this team has been
more about the people than the racing. I’ve learned a ton from my Agee teammates—from
how to set up the car, to racing lines, strategy, and yes, patience. The racing is great, but the
friendships are what make it all worth it!!
